I couldn’t imagine that anyone else could find these things frightening or experience ineffable horror because something was slightly off. All of these stories, which sound amusing in retrospect, were horrifying at the time and shaped my imagination. I developed a lifelong fascination with doppelgängers. What do all of these seemingly random, bizarre incidents have in common? They challenged what I thought I understood about the world. They made something familiar and natural its opposite. I didn’t revisit these early memories until I read Freud’s essay The Uncanny in my freshman gothic literature class at Stonehill College in fall 2007. Freud writes that the word “uncanny” is difficult to define but can describe an ineffable feeling of dread or wrongness. Uncanny (unheimlich in German) literally means unfamiliar or not homey. “Thus  heimlich  is a word the meaning of which develops in the direction of ambivalence, until it finally coincides with its opposite,  unheimlich. Unheimlich  is in some way or other a sub-species of  Heimlich (4).” In other words, it’s not unfamiliarity itself, but the inability to tell whether something is familiar or unfamiliar, which is so unsettling and threatening. Freud uses anecdotal evidence from literature and his own and patients’ lives to support this idea. Uncertainty can be uncanny, especially when we can’t tell whether someone or something is animate or inanimate. It’s how most people feel when seeing a dead body, and Freud thinks that it’s vestigial, from a time when most of our ancestors believed in ghosts. Long before I could articulate why, Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker always horrified me on a visceral level. I loved most of its elements individually: symphonic music, Christmas, fairytales with princes or princesses. Together, however, these pieces were totally unsettling. Instead of a romance between royals who are close in age, it’s the story of a wooden nutcrackerâ€"a child’s toyâ€"that transforms into a prince. He’s the adult love interest in a young girl’s romantic dream. He’s also an inanimate object that transforms into a person. This eerie, liminal space between right and wrong, comforting and creepy, alive or not, illustrates Freud’s descriptions in “The Uncanny.” While researching the uncanny, I discovered that the author of the original story of The Nutcracker was E.T.A. Hoffman. Freud draws extensively on Hoffman’s other stories to illustrate “The Uncanny.” Although I wasn’t previously aware of this connection, it doesn’t surprise me at all. Hoffmans  stories share common elements, such as ghastly creations that are intended to be magical. All of this might sound esoteric, but the concept of the uncanny persists under different names throughout our culture. Some people would call unexpectedly seeing a double, like I did with my teddy bear, “a glitch in the Matrix.” Anyone who’s experienced déjà vu remembers the unsettling feeling of being unsure whether something is familiar or unfamiliar. As robots, dolls, and computer animation become increasingly realistic, they also approach the uncanny. This concept is called the uncanny valley. I became obsessed with the uncanny valley and found websites that plotted modern examples of it on graphs. The graphs formed a bell curve, with the least uncanny phenomena (industrial, non-humanoid robots and “healthy people”) at the extremes. The most uncanny things, including marionette puppets and automata, were found in the middle of the curve. To my horror, other entries right in the middle included “prosthetic limbs,” “disabled people,” and even “the way a physically disabled person moves.” I hope that by 2019 standards (as opposed to 2007), the ableism here is apparent. Did I always feel unconsciously freaked out by the uncanny because of its connection to ableism? I’m not sure, but from a young age, I was horrified whenever non-disabled people treated me as strange or different. I have cerebral palsy and a distinctive gait. Freud repeatedly uses disability and physical and mental illnesses to illustrate the uncanny. His examples include epilepsy and “dismembered limbs” (14). People with other disabilities have also connected ableism to the uncanny. If we feel repulsed by something or someone, it’s often necessary to examine why and ask whether the root is prejudice. In the futuristic world depicted in Feed by M.T. Anderson, nobody thinks for themselves – the feed thinks for them. Everyone is dependent on the feed and bored with their everyday lives. Because of this, the character Violet stands out. Violet’s unique upbringing caused her to become an educated thinker and excited about life, setting her apart from the rest of the characters. Violet stands outs from the characters in Feed because she was raised differently. Violet did not get her feed installed early in her life like most people did, she â€Å"got the feed really late† (Anderson 170) at age seven. Because Violet did not have the feed for several years of her life she is not dependent on it like the other individuals are in the book, making her an uncommon symbol of independence in the dystopian narrative Violet did not go to School like Titus’ friends did; she and her friends were â€Å"are all home-schooled† (78). While Titus and his friends were learning how to use the feed at School, Violet was getting an actual education, learning things that were no longer important in their world. Also, Violet did not have a lot of money growing up. Most of Titus’ friends always got everything they wanted, but Violet didn’t have â€Å"much of the stuff you see on the feed when she was younger. A lot of it was too expensive, or her father just said no† (107). Because of the lack of money in Violet’s life she grew up having to find different ways to entertain herself instead of relying on the feed for entertainment. Ultimately, Violet had a diverse childhood than the other characters. The fact that Violet got a different education than most of the characters in Feed sets her apart from them because it made her more intelligent. For example, when Violet as ks Titus if he knew how to read, unsurprisingly, he only knows how to read a little (Anderson, 65). Violet knows how to read and Titus barley does because he did not learn in School. Titus is shocked when he asks Violet if she writes because she replies, Ive done it since I was littleI write down things I see sometimes (66). Violet knows how to do these things because her father was a college professor and he taught her how to write and read, even though writing and reading were no longer taught in schools. It is shocking to Titus that Violet would take the time to write something down because using the feed was way faster (66), but Violet is used to not using the feed for everything due to getting the feed at a later age. Violet also pays attention to the news; she asks Titus â€Å"Have you heard the news? It’s awful† (244). Because Violet wants to learn more about the world she pays attention to what is going on in their lives. This makes Violet unique because she knows what is going on in the world while the rest of the characters are uninformed. Violet stands out because she is knowledgeable about things that are no longer important in their innovative society. While Violet was homeschooled she was taught to think for herself, unlike the other characters who let the feed think for them. Violet recalls to Titus, â€Å"When you have the feed all your life, you’re brought up to not think about things†¦ because of the feed we are raising a nation of idiots† (Anderson 113). Considering that Violet did not always have the feed she knows how to function without it. In contrast, Violet’s peers are reliant on using the feed for almost every task. Also, during a party Violet rants â€Å"We are hovering in the air while people are starving†¦ We’re playing games and our skin is falling off. We’re losing it† (201). Due to Violet’s upbringing she is knowledgeable about what is going on in the world. Because Violet is aware of what is happening in the news she does not take the things she has for granted, like the rest of the characters do. Violet then later yells, â€Å"You don’t have the feed! You are the feed† (202). Most of the characters are so accustom to using the feed that they are not use to thinking for themselves. The feed is attacking their brains continuously with ads, information, and useless material that they do not know what it is like to live without it. Because Violet did not always have the feed, she knows how to not rely on the feed for everything. The characters are slowly becoming the feed because they no longer know how to think without it. Violet’s education causes her to think without having to use the feed which makes her stand out from her peers. Violet is the only character that is excited and interested about new experiences because she did not grow up with the same types of things that most people had. For example, when Titus first meets Violet he finds out that â€Å"she was on the moon alone†¦she was there to observe† (Anderson 29). While Titus was bored on the moon with his friends, Violet was there alone having fun and experiencing new things. Titus and his friends took it for granted that they were on the moon when Violet’s father â€Å"saved up for a year† (103) to send her there. It was special for Violet to go to the moon because that is something she has never done before. The other characters have traveled to other planets before, so it was not a big deal for them. Also, before Titus takes Violet to a party she asks, â€Å"What’ll a party be like?† (78). Vi olet is eager to go to a party because she has never been to a real high school party before, making it a new experience for her. Even though toward the end of the book Violet does not have much more time to live, she still wants to explore and â€Å"go out and see the world. There’s just so much† (175). Despite Violet’s circumstances, she has a positive attitude and is eager for the next adventure in her life. Considering that Violet didn’t grow up with the same opportunities as her peers, she doesn’t let it discourage her; instead she is excited about what life has to offer. As a result of Violet’s uncommon upbringing, she has distinctly different qualities from the other characters in the book. While most of the characters let the feed control them and their thoughts, Violet does not let this happen. Violet is educated enough to know not to rely on the feed for everything, and the lack of opportunities in her childhood allows her to be excited about life. Even in contemporary philosophy, the idea is oftentimes employed, in different forms. So, what is nature? Nature and the Essence of a Thing The philosophical tradition that traces back to Aristotle employs the idea of nature to explain that which defines the essence of a thing. One of the most fundamental metaphysical concepts, the essence indicates those properties that define what a thing is. The essence of water, for instance, will be its molecular structure, the essence of a species, its ancestral history; the essence of a human, its self-consciousness or its soul. Within the Aristotelian traditions, hence, to act in accordance with nature means to take into account the real definition of each thing when dealing with it. The Natural World At times the idea of nature is instead used to refer to anything that exists in the universe as part of the physical world. In this sense, the idea embraces anything that falls under the study of the natural sciences, from physics to biology to environmental studies. Natural vs. Artificial Natural is often used also to refer to a process which occurs spontaneously as opposed to one that occurs as the result of the deliberation of a being. Nature vs. Nurture Related to the spontaneity vs. artificiality divide is the idea of nature as opposed to nurture. The idea of culture becomes here central to draw the line. That which is natural as opposed to that which is the outcome of a cultural process. Education is a central example of a non-natural process: under many accounts, education is seen as a process against nature. Clearly enough, from this perspective there are some items that cannot ever be purely natural: any human development is shaped by the activity, or lack thereof, of interaction with other human beings; there is no such thing as a natural development of human language, for instance. Nature as Wilderness The idea of nature is at times used to express the wilderness. Wilderness lives at the edge of civilization, of any cultural processes.
